This plugin enables community comments on your Koken site using Disqus, the popular third-party discussion platform used by sites everywhere. Once activated, Disqus-powered comments will automatically appear underneath essays and (in some themes) content pages as well. The plugin also enables the display of comment counts on essay indexes so site visitors can see the number of comments each essay has received.

Disqus comments automatically match the color scheme of your chosen theme. You can override this and make further customizations through your Disqus account page once the plugin has been enabled.

Next: Setup

Follow these steps to setup the Disqus plugin.

Enabling the plugin

After the plugin has successfully downloaded and installed you will be redirected to Settings > Plugins inside Koken. Click the plugin's Enable button to activate the plugin.

Setup your Disqus profile

Head over to Disqus.com. If you don't already have an account, sign-up for one. Once your account is ready, register your site. Disqus will then publish a site "shortname" on your Dashboard page. Copy this shortname to your clipboard.

Setup the plugin

With your Disqus profile successfully setup, head back to Settings > Plugins inside Koken. Click the Setup button nexto to the Disqus plugin. In the plugin setup screen, paste your Disqus shortname into the field provided.

When finished click the Save button. The Disqus plugin is now setup! Browse your site and (assuming your current theme includes the necessary template tags) you should see Disqus content on supported pages, which is typically essay and content (individual image and video) pages.

Next: Color and style

Discussion color and style

Disqus reads the styles in a comment form's parent HTML page to determine whether it uses a light or dark color scheme. You can read more about that process in their documentation. If the color scheme Disqus chooses for you doesn't look right, you may override this through your Disqus account. Here's how.

  1. Sign-in to the Disqus account you created earlier.
  2. Click on your site link under the "Your Sites" header in the left column.
  3. Click on the "Settings" tab at the far right of the following page.
  4. In the "General" tab will be a "Color scheme" drop-down (see screenshot below). Edit this accordingly.
  5. Scroll to the bottom and click "Save Changes".

Next: Discovery content

Eliminate discovery content

By default, Disqus pushes additional "Discovery" content below comments. This content includes links to other pages within your site and links to outside sites as well. If you'd rather not display Discovery content, follow these steps.

  1. Sign-in to the Disqus account you created earlier.
  2. Click on your site link under the "Your Sites" header in the left column.
  3. Click on the "Settings" tab at the far right of the following page.
  4. In the initial "General" tab, uncheck "Show links to discussions..." (see figure below).
  5. Scroll to the bottom and click "Save Changes".

Theme design tips

If you are designing your own custom theme we recommend adding the <koken:discussion> (link) tag to any template you'd like to enable discussions with. This tag is used by the Disqus plugin to generate the comment area, and could be used in the future to support competing commenting services as well.

Additionally, if you'd like to display a comment count on a separate page (e.g., Essays) you can do that by adding the <koken:discussion_count> tag (link).
